Repsol Worldwide

United States

Repsol in the United States. View of the Marcellus field
The United States has enormous energy production capacity, making it a strategic country for us. The unconventional hydrocarbon revolution and the country’s long-standing tradition in the industry has enabled it to go from being a net hydrocarbon importer to the world’s leading energy producer in just a short number of years, according to the International Energy Agency. The political stability of the country and its privileged location with access to both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, bordering Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, make the United States an attractive country for companies like Repsol.

Our operations in the United States

Since starting operations in the United States at the end of 2006, we have racked up significant assets including the Marcellus Shale, one of the world’s largest gas fields, Buckskin in the deep sea of the Gulf of Mexico, and the discovery made in Alaska in 2017, considered the largest conventional hydrocarbon find on US soil in 30 years.

These Upstream projects are combined with our activities in Trading and in Wholesale Gas Trading, where we oversee the CanaportTM LNG regasification plant in Canada, which has a maximum send-out capacity of 1.2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day and mainly serves customers in the Northeast region of the country.

Marcellus Shale

Extending through the Appalachian Basin and stretching across Pennsylvania, the Marcellus Shale is one of the largest natural gas fields in the world, where we started our operations in 2015. Average natural gas production at this field is 490 million cubic feet per day, representing 47% of Repsol’s total production in North America.

North Slope

This is one of the projects that we have focused on most in recent years, operated in consortium with Amstrong Oil & Gas, and it was one of the greatest hydrocarbon discoveries worldwide in 2017. In addition, we have obtained 69 exploration blocks in the North Slope area in Alaska. Repsol has a 100% working interest and is the operator of 34 of them, and holds a 25% stake in the remaining 35, which are operated by Oil Search. In November, we acquired the rights for a further 12 blocks located to the east (9 blocks) and the south (3 blocks) of Pikka Unit. During the 2018-2019 winter exploration campaign in Alaska, in January '19 the presence of hydrocarbons was confirmed in the south part of the Pikka unit, where the first delineation well named Pikka-B was completed.

Gulf of Mexico

In this area, we are developing several projects that cover a total of 119 blocks. This is in addition to the Buckskin production block, one of the most important deep water energy fields in the zone where we hold a 22.5% share. In mid-June 2019, we started production earlier than anticipated with a 60% reduction in costs from the original development plan.

Eagle Ford

We reached a deal with Equinor to acquire its shares in Eagle Ford (Texas), where we now hold 100% of this productive asset, as well as serve as operator.

The incorporation of these shares in the asset will allow us to implement efficiency improvements in the operations and synergies.
