Repsol Technology Lab: our technology hub

Repsol's innovation epicenter

The Repsol Technology Lab is Repsol's technological R&D headquarters. With more than 230 scientists and international experts, this technological hub is the company's engine of innovation and the epicenter where products and technological solutions are developed to boost the energy industry.

Our facilities: research and technological development laboratories

The true value of Repsol Technology Lab lies in our people. Scientists and technology experts from different scientific disciplines work every day to produce innovative products and technological solutions that will transform the energy industry.

Laboratories, where ideas become reality

Repsol Technology Lab laboratories are equipped with the latest techniques for experimentation and analysis, focused on the development of new products of renewable origin. To accelerate these developments, they rely on the latest technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence.

Pilot plants, scaled replicas of our industrial complexes

Our pilot plants is where we develop small-scale recreations of processes. Equipped with high-tech equipment, they reproduce the same processes that are carried out in industrial complexes, simulating identical conditions and monitoring all variables. Their purpose is to:

  • Test new raw materials
  • Optimize operational efficiency
  • Maximize operations

Technology + Talent, the formula to promote the energy sector of the future

The true value of Repsol Technology Lab lies in its people. Scientists and technologists, from different disciplines, work every day to promote innovative products and technological solutions to transform the energy industry.

Technological innovation is key to achieving our goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The talent and dedication of our scientists and technology experts, added to our open innovation model, allow us to drive solutions that are transforming the energy sector.

Repsol Technology Lab is the first research center of a private company to receive the European HR Excellence in Research certification, awarded by the European Commission. The recognition highlights our commitment to a human resources strategy that promotes a favorable working environment for researchers.

FAQs about Repsol Technology Lab

Tech Lab is located in Móstoles, Madrid. It is one of the most advanced private research centers in Spain and Europe, with an area of more than 50,000 square meters dedicated entirely to energy innovation.

The center's activity takes place in four specialized strategic areas:

  • Decarbonization of mobility: Development of 100% renewable and synthetic fuels.
  • Circular economy: Creation of new materials and advanced recycling processes (such as the Repsol Reciclex® range).
  • Industrial asset optimization: Application of digital technologies to improve plant efficiency.
  • Hydrogen technologies: Research into the production of renewable hydrogen and its industrial application.

The following are some of the lab's top projects right now:

  • All4Zero: an industrial technological innovation hub, one-of-its-kind in Spain, where we work to accelerate zero-emission solutions.
  • 100% renewable fuels: production of 100% renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) based on organic waste.
  • Photoelectrocatalysis: a technology developed in conjunction with Enagás to produce renewable hydrogen directly from solar energy.
  • HPC4E: high-performance computing simulations to improve efficiency in the generation of power from wind and other resources.

Tech Lab has a state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes:

  • More than 35 pilot plants crafting small-scale recreations of industrial processes.
  • 20 laboratories specialized in areas such as biotechnology, computational chemistry, and materials characterization.
  • Robotics and artificial intelligence applied to scientific experimentation.
  • State-of-the-art engine test benches to validate the behavior of lubricants and fuels under real-life conditions.

The lab has a multidisciplinary team of approximately 230 scientists and researchers. This talent includes experts in chemical engineering, advanced mathematics, biotechnology, and sustainability, all of whom collaborate daily to transform today's energy model.

Our technology lab is Repsol's scientific brain and the engine behind our transformation. It acts as the bridge between basic research and industrial implementation, allowing new technologies to be tested and validated before global deployment.

The lab supports the entrepreneurial ecosystem through its open innovation model:

  • Entrepreneurs Fund: provides financial support, technical advice, and mentoring to start-ups with disruptive solutions.
  • IdeAction: a platform for rapid proof of concept in real installations.
  • Technological scaling: the lab makes its infrastructures and the knowledge of its experts available so that start-ups can move from a prototype to a marketable solution safely and efficiently.
