Abandonment of well BUY-X2

A benchmark case of environmental management and local development

The abandonment of well BUY-X2 has set an example for our entire sector. Through cooperation with area communities, we have successfully combined the finalization of our extractive activities with the generation of new opportunities for local development.

From its inception, the abandonment process of the BUY-X2 well at the Caipipendi project in Bolivia was conceived as an opportunity to contribute to the development of local communities from a perspective based on the principles of the circular economy. The actions carried out during the asset's decommissioning phase went beyond the legally required minimum, offering a case study in the application of best practices in environmental and social management.

From the beginning, we worked to find solutions in lockstep with technicians, local land and business owners, and local authorities. After numerous meetings with all parties, agreements were reached for the area's reconversion through a strategy aimed at both natural preservation and the recovery of the lands previously used by the company for productive use.

Achieving results

The result was the transformation of our oil infrastructure into land suitable for farming, including the reuse of pools as troughs and ponds, the construction of pens and sheds, and the installation of irrigation systems.

In addition to the social and environmental benefits generated, this project has achieved great savings in both economic and environmental terms.
