Repsol Master range lubricants verified by LRQA as carbon-neutral products

Press Release 21/06/2022 12:00
  • For several years now, Repsol has been immersed in a transformation and diversification process of its businesses with the aim of leading the energy transition, and it was the first to set the goal of becoming a net zero emissions company by 2050.
  • The Master range includes 11 high-performance products for passenger vehicles, so it's one of the ranges in which product differentiation is most important.
  • We performed an environmental assessment on the product carbon footprint of these new lubricants using the life cycle analysis method, in line with the standard UNE-EN ISO 14067:2018 in order to comply with all the necessary requirements to obtain a rigorous, accurate, and comparable Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) estimate.
  • Repsol leads the sale of lubricants on the Iberian Peninsula with a 26% market share in Spain and 20% in Portugal in 2021.

As part of its goal to become a net zero emissions company by 2050 and in line with its commitment to offer society more sustainable and eco-friendly products, Repsol has just launched its first-ever carbon-neutral lubricants.

Repsol's Master range comprises 11 high-performance lubricants for conventional and hybrid passenger vehicles. The low viscosity and selected additives of these products also enable greater fuel economy compared to traditional lubricants.

We have assessed the environmental impact of these new lubricants using the life cycle analysis method while also meeting the requirements of standard UNE-EN ISO 14067:2018 to obtain a rigorous, accurate, and comparable Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) estimate. Subsequently, LRQA verified our calculations according to the same standard.

Once the impact of greenhouse gases (GHGs) was assessed and minimized throughout the product life cycle, we then offset the unmitigated emissions associated with each of the Master range lubricants placed on the market by Repsol. This is what has made it possible to offer different customers a product with a GHG-neutral life cycle. These offsets are also verified by LRQA in line with the ISO 14064-3:2019 standard: 2019.

Furthermore, the audit and verification ratifies the integrity and credibility of the whole system, from the moment of acquiring the credits, cancelation, and production of the certificates for the offset product.

During the launch at the Repsol Campus, the multi-energy company’s corporate headquarters, Repsol director of Lubricants, Clara Velasco, and Repsol director of Sustainability, Fernando Ruiz, received the certificate verifying this initiative from Olga Rivas, technical director for LRQA Iberia.

Olga Rivas, technical director for LRQA Iberia, stated, "We are thrilled to have verified the carbon neutrality of Repsol's Master range of lubricants. This is an important step for the multi-energy company and for the sector, from both a strategic point of view — as a tangible demonstration of Repsol's commitment to making more sustainable products throughout its value chain — as well as from a technical point of view: because behind this neutrality are the planning, action, and partnerships involved in this accomplishment. All of this includes renewable base materials, recycled packaging, and lastly, offsets for the emissions that could not be reduced, which have also been verified."

Clara Velasco, Repsol director of Lubricants, pointed out that, "This certification that we have just received from LRQA is an assurance of the methodological rigor, the offsetting process, and guarantees the consistent quality of data throughout the process. It's also another step towards our goal of becoming a net zero emissions company by 2050."

Fernando Ruiz, Repsol director of Sustainability, highlighted that, "The decarbonization of our products is one of our greatest priorities. Repsol is committed to providing our customers with products that have an increasingly smaller carbon footprint, thus helping them along their own individual paths to net zero emissions."

In this regard, Repsol's Lubricants business is the most international of the multi-energy group as it has business operations in around 80 countries. Moreover, the acquisition of 40% in 2018 of the Mexican company Bardahl and 40% in 2019 of United Oil, headquartered in Singapore and with two manufacturing plants in Indonesia and Singapore, marked a step forward in its growth strategy. Repsol currently leads the sale of lubricants on the Iberian Peninsula with a 26% market share in Spain and 20% in Portugal in 2021.
