Antonio Brufau opens the Ubari hospital in Libya

  • Repsol and the Libyan Government agreed in 2007 to begin work on refurbishing and improving the facilities at the Ubari Hospital in the Murzuq Basin.

Repsol Chairman, Antonio Brufau, the Libyan Energy Minister, Shukri Ghanem, and the Health Minister, Muhammad Hijazi, opened the refurbished Ubari Hospital in south-western Libya, in the Murzuq Basin. In November 2007, the company signed an agreement with the Libyan Ministry of Health and Environment to refurbish the premises, and work began in 2008. 

Repsol delivered two ambulances, two buses and the first provision of basic medical equipment to the hospital as part of the commitments included in the agreement. Water and electricity supply facilities and the air conditioning system were also repaired.

With a budget of 6.5 million Euros, this agreement has not only allowed the refurbishment and improvement of the facilities, but has also given rise to the implementation of training programs for hospital staff, ensuring the continuity of the project. The training program, targeted at both the medical and nursing teams, is carried out at the Amman University in Jordan.

The opening of this Hospital is part of Repsol’s commitment to supporting local community development, contributing to sustainable development in the regions where the company operates. This initiative is being carried out together with partners Total, OMV and Statoil-Hydro.

Repsol in Libya

Repsol is present in Libya since the 70s and today is the largest private oil company in that country. In June 2008, Repsol signed an extension agreement for its exploration rights in blocks NC-186 y NC-115 until 2032.

During 2009, work has continued on the full development of the I/R field, in the Murzuq basin, in blocks NC-186 and NC-115, Repsol participates in both. In April of the same year, the company made its first offshore discovery in Libyan waters, with the A1 NC-202 well. Repsol's net production in Libya was 12.7 million barrels of oil during that year.

 The opening of the refurbished Ubari Hopital was attended by OMV Libya General Manager Kurt Wagner, Repsol Chairman Antonio Brufau, Total Libya General Manager Thierry Debertrand, Energy Minister and Libya NOC Chairman Shukri Ghanem, Regional Health Secretary Mabrukah Al-Selhab, Minister of Health Muhammad Hijazi, Statoil Deputy Libya General Manager Fadel Harib and the Ubari Hospital General Manager Aljair Fouaad.
