Repsol in Libya

Libya scenery

Our first exploration and production activities in Libya date back to the early seventies with a focus on our Upstream business. Since then, the success achieved by us in our projects and discoveries have contributed to making Libya one of the most outstanding countries for our growth strategy.

We carry out our exploration operations through our subsidiary Repsol Exploration Murzuq S.A. (REMSA), while the development and production operations are operated by Akakus Oil Operations; a Joint Operating Company on behalf of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (First Party) and Repsol, TotalEnergies, OMV, and Equinor (Second party). The El Sharara assets have the potential of producing around 350 thousand barrels of oil per day. Production is evacuated to the tank farm located in the city of Zawia, 723 km from the El Sharara Field. The tank farm has a capacity of 2.7 million barrels and is feeding the local refinery as well as the tanker loading facilities for export.

In 2008, REMSA, together with TotalEnergies, OMV, and Equinor* (Second Party) signed the migrated Exploration and Production Sharing Agreements (EPSA III) to EPSA IV for both Contract Areas with REMSA remaining the Operator of the exploration activities.

REMSA’s share in the exploration activities is as follows:

  • Contract Areas 129/130 (NC115): 40%.
  • Contract Areas 130/131 (NC186): 32%.

For the El Sharara production activities, the maximum Second Party share of production is 13% in Contract Areas 129/130 (NC115) and 12% in Contract Areas 130/131 (NC186). The share of production for REMSA in the 13% and 12% is also 40% and 32%, respectively.
