Tarragona Hydrogen Network

T-HYNET

The T-HYNET initiative, led by Repsol, represents a decisive step in the deployment of renewable hydrogen on an industrial scale in Spain.

The project includes the installation of a 150-megawatt (MW) alkaline electrolyzer at the Repsol Industrial Complex in Tarragona, with the capacity to produce up to 2.7 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per hour, as well as 21.4 tonnes of electrolytic oxygen, which will contribute to the decarbonization of the local industrial environment.

Thanks to this infrastructure, it is estimated that up to 200 kilotonnes of CO2 emissions per year could be avoided, an amount equivalent to the annual energy consumption of more than 37,000 homes in Europe or the absorption capacity of some 4 million trees. This environmental impact makes T-HYNET a key project to advance the decarbonization of industrial sectors that are difficult to electrify, in line with the climate objectives of Spain and the European Union.

T-HYNET has been selected as one of the strategic projects within the state program of Hydrogen Valleys, promoted by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, within the framework of the Spanish Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan financed with Next Generation EU funds. Thanks to this initiative, it has received aid of 104.19 million euros.

This project is integrated into the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia and the Ebro Hydrogen Corridor, two key ecosystems for the development of the hydrogen economy in southern Europe.

With this project, we strengthen our role as an energy company committed to decarbonization, advancing in the development of innovative solutions that drive the energy transition through renewable hydrogen and its industrial applications.

The electrolyzer will be equipped with advanced technology that will allow to maximize the energy efficiency of the process and use recovered industrial water in the consumption of process water during the production of renewable hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen generated will have a wide variety of applications that will contribute to the decarbonization of different sectors. It will be used first as a raw material in local industry, especially in refining processes and production of chemical products such as e-methanol that will be produced at Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solution and in the future as an energy vector in sustainable mobility solutions, in particular for heavy and collective transport and in other possible uses.

Currently, the project is in the engineering phase and start-up is planned from 2028. Its development will significantly boost the industrial and technological network of the territory, generating employment and attracting investment, and contributing to the fulfillment of the climate objectives of Spain and the European Union.
