Oil production is one of the most important economic activities for the development and growth of Mexico. This country has a significant amount of hydrocarbons and a long industrial tradition, as well as refining capacity and experience. To the north, it shares a border with the United States and to the south with Guatemala and Belize. The Pacific lies on the west coast and the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea on the east.

Repsol arrived in Mexico in 1999. Here, we distribute lubricants and specialized products, develop exploration and production activities, and have strategic partnerships with local companies that share our values and principles of honesty and integrity. We are also present throughout the oil and gas value chain and are clearly committed to growing alongside the Mexican market. Our objective is to provide a responsible energy supply and contribute towards the economic development of the country.
In 2018, Repsol received the contract for 6 offshore exploration blocks in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil discoveries were made in two of them – located in deep waters, off the coasts of Veracruz and Tabasco – in 2020, with great potential and excellent properties.
Repsol is part of two logistics projects for storing and distributing hydrocarbons, with a storage capacity of more than 600,000 barrels of oil.
In its all its activities – both direct and indirect – Repsol generates around 1,800 jobs. Ensuring the safety of people and operations, the Company has incorporated various training programs into the work integration process aimed at the correct management of operations, focused on risk prevention and health and safety; as well as knowledge in the application of codes of ethics and business conduct that everyone who works at Repsol must comply with.
Local Sustainability Report
In 2020, Repsol's Sustainability Plan was launched in Mexico to keep on working for the sustainable economic and social growth of the country. This plan was created as a document to reinforce the company's commitment to sustainable development and transparency, and which formally and systematically responds to the expectations of Mexican society regarding Repsol's activity.
One year after its launch, and with the COVID-19 pandemic spread throughout Mexico and the world, Repsol's 2020 Sustainability Plan was adapted to continue developing despite the crisis caused by the health crisis. The 13 commitments acquired by the company in Mexico have been worked on taking into account all mobility restrictions and health protocols, with the intention of avoiding infections.
These 13 commitments were defined in line with SDG 6,7, 8, 9, 12, and 13 of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Responsible Production and Consumption; and Climate Action.
We currently have more than 250 service stations in the country in over 18 different states. We aim to become an important player in the Mexican service station sector. Therefore, we are making significant investments and have the support, experience, and professionalism of our Mexican partners, who share our goals of continuous improvement and excellent customer service standards. Safety, integrity, and transparency are our top priorities in our service.
We have a synthetic rubber production plant in Altamira, with an installed capacity of 100%. Since 1999, we have been part of Dynasol, a business dedicated to the production of rubber in solution in partnership with the Mexican group KUO.
We produce lubricants in Mexico through our 40% stake in Bardahl, a well-recognized and highly experienced Mexican lubricants and automotive fluids manufacturer that owns one of the most modern production plants in Latin America, located in Toluca. In addition, we continue to sell and distribute lubricants through our commercial office in the country.
