ARiA: Repsol's artificial intelligence ecosystem

An industrial-scale artificial intelligence model

ARiA is Repsol's artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem designed to transform data into strategic value. By using machine learning, generative AI (GenAI), and big data, ARiA optimizes processes and decision making. It's one of the pillars that drives us to be a data-driven company.

We sort a massive amount of data to add intelligence to our processes and decisions

For some years now at Repsol, we've been immersed in an ambitious Digital Transformation Plan aimed at consolidating our energy transition. One of the pillars of this digitalization process involves becoming a data-driven organization — and to achieve this, our Data & Analytics Hub developed ARiA.

It's a big data and artificial intelligence cloud platform that centralizes all of the company’s data to develop analytics models and algorithms that help improve processes and decision-making.

  • Named "Best private use and application of artificial intelligence in business" at the Ametic AI Summit 2021.

  • €200 million in economic impact through 2022.

  • Supports over 60% of products generated by the digital program.

ARiA's technological capabilities: data science, machine learning, and genAI

ARiA supports hundreds of digital initiatives that are being carried out across our various business units. For example: InWell collects extraction data from wells from all over the world to control them from Madrid. Another example is Vivit, which helps our customers save by detecting which electrical appliance use the most energy in their homes.

Developed based on Microsoft Azure, ARiA includes various solutions for data intake, cloud configurations, data governance tools, and machine learning models. It also aids in the democratization of data as it enables anyone, regardless of their knowledge of analytics, to access information of greater value.

Moreover, ARiA is fundamental as the basis for various initiatives that have been launched within the company related to the data culture. For instance, the information provided by ARiA is used to organize HackIA, an innovation and entrepreneurship hackathon event that has already produced interesting proposals. Another initiative is Data School, a periodic training program aimed at profiles that until now have not worked with data. Here, they acquire new knowledge and skills for a better experience with the platform, enabling them to use the data and all the possibilities that ARiA has to offer.

ARiA is regarded as a trailblazing tool in the sector, which is demonstrated by the various awards it has already received. In fact, we've launched it outside the organization to assist other companies in deploying and accelerating the use of big data and AI in their fields.

Our goal now is to ensure the platform's continuing evolution and remain leaders in digital transformation and the use of data. To this end, our Data & Analytics Hub comprises a highly-trained team with profiles from different disciplines such as engineering and data science, and it hasn’t stopped growing.

FAQs about Repsol's ARiA

ARiA is Repsol's own artificial intelligence ecosystem. More than a tool, it's a comprehensive platform that centralizes talent, data, and technology. Its main purpose is to serve as an accelerator to scale digital solutions in all areas of the company's business, from exploration to customer service.

Repsol integrates generative AI to boost operational efficiency and creativity. It's mainly applied to:

  • Smart assistants: these facilitate the search and analysis of complex technical information for employees.
  • Process optimization: automation of repetitive tasks and generation of detailed reports.
  • Software development: support in the creation and review of code to accelerate in-house technological innovation.

The implementation of ARiA generates tangible benefits in three fundamental axes:

  • Efficiency: it optimizes energy consumption in industrial complexes, helping reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Operational security: it improves the prediction of possible incidents in infrastructures.
  • Personalization: it offers customers offers and services that are much more tailored to their real needs through channels such as Waylet.

Yes. One of the pillars of ARiA is its cloud-based architecture, which allows a solution developed for a specific business to be quickly replicated and adapted to other departments. This scalability ensures that knowledge and innovation flow throughout the organization without having to start from scratch on every project.

Repsol has hundreds of active use cases, including:

  • Predictive maintenance: algorithms that detect when a machine needs overhaul before it fails.
  • Waylet: personalization of promotions and smart payment management.
  • Energy management: real-time optimization of the production and sale of energy.
  • Circular economy: AI models to improve polymer recycling and waste management.

ARiA transforms data into actionable knowledge. By processing massive volumes of information in an automated manner, the platform offers predictive models that enable business leaders to:

  • Reduce uncertainty in the face of volatile market scenarios.
  • Base decisions on objective data rather than assumptions.
  • Identify savings or investment opportunities that would go unnoticed in manual analyses.

Digitalization: the key pillar to ensure the success of our Strategic Plan

In 2018, we launched the First Wave of the Digital Program (2018-2022), a company-wide initiative.

In this initiative, businesses are the protagonists of their own digital transformation.

Following the completion of the first stage, we have extended the Program with a Second Digital Wave (2023-2027).
