Commitment to progress
The chemicals industry is the only sector with a programme integrating safety and the environment, which in Spain is called "COMPROMISO DE PROGRESO", or "COMMITMENT TO PROGRESS." This programme has been put into progress in 47 countries. For its contribution to Sustainable Development, it earned the UN's recognition at the Johannesburg Earth Summit.
The human team handling Repsol YPF's chemical area constantly and rigorously follows regulatory and environmental demands in order to give society a real, quantifiable guarantee. They are constantly innovating their plans for safety, recycling, energy efficiency and CO2 emission reduction. This is all in line with the international regulation known as "Commitment to Progress."
It is a voluntary, public, active commitment that companies in the chemicals industry make to themselves and society in order to promote ongoing progress of its activities in all spheres relating to safety, health, the environment and people.
Plastics help reduce CO2
Reducing vehicles weight by approximately 360 kilograms by using plastic pieces during production, calculated at more than 1000 pieces each, saves an estimated 750 litres of fuel consumption for an average 150 thousand kilometres. This reduces CO2 emissions in Europe by more than 9 millions tons per year.
In terms of freight transport, plastics also participate in environmental conservation, given that most products from various industries have plastic packaging which considerably reduces the space they take up, and in turn, the number of transport vehicles needed, consequently reducing the amount of fuel consumed during the distribution process.
Furthermore, chemical insulation helps keep houses warm in the winter and keep air conditioned homes cool in the summer. Thanks to insulation, energy consumption and contaminant emissions are drastically reduced.
