Have you noticed that most food comes wrapped or packed in plastic?
Plastic containers and packages are fundamental in order to process, store, ship, protect, and preserve products, because they offer practically unlimited opportunities and can be technically adapted to each specification.
Thanks to plastic, perishable foods last longer, less food is wasted, and not as many preservatives are needed. And, all the taste and nutritional value is maintained.
The bottling and packaging sector is still the main market for plastic products. In Spain alone it made up 46.8% of all plastic consumed by the transformer industry in 2005- that's 1,881,200 tons, growing 5.8% compared to the previous financial year, according to Spain's "Centro Español de Plástico" (Plastic Centre).
In Europe, more than 50% of all merchandise is packaged in plastic, but these plastics only make up 17% of the total package net weight, which represents in turn a decrease of the space which the different places must pass for their commercialization, until they arrive at our homes.
