Responsible Care is a voluntary, public and active commitment, by the companies with together themselves and society, to the coninous progress of their activities regarding safety, health, and the environment in the full range of their activities.
Responsible Care seeks the progressive orientation of the values in companies, in such a way that safety and the protection of health and environment become priorities for all employees in performing their functions and in agreement with the principles of sustainable development.
The program began in Canada in 1985, and today is being applied in forty countries. Repsol Química was among the first companies in Spain to join in, declaring its participation on 20th February 1992, and contributing in an active way to its launch beginning its public presence in Spain began in 1993.
This commitment produces continuous improvement by following a set of guidelines that are included in the Codes of Management Practices.
To ensure the effectivity of these management practices, they are periodically audited in each centre, both by internal auditors (autoevaluation) as well as by external auditors (FEIQUE)
One of the purposes of the Commitment to Progress program is to promote communication between the chemical sector and society based on transparency of information. In keeping with this, the chemical division, along with the other 121 companies adhering to the program, participated in the reports published by the Spanish Federation of Chemical Industries in 1995 and 1997 which include information on activity and environmental incidents between 1987 and 1995.
In conformity with one of the Basic Principles of the Commitment, the Company exchanges information and experience with the other companies taking part in the program, in order to strengthen and speed up the improvements that contribute to sustainable development.
