Frequently Asked Questions
Have all your queries answered below:
- What is a lubricant?
It is a mix of base oils plus additives which improve its qualities and performance. It is used to:
- Reduce friction between two metallic surfaces.
- Protect metallic organs from wearing and corrosion.
- Clean and cool engines. The lubricant acts as a sealant for the segments/pistons and the piston skirts with the aim of avoiding compression fires.
- Can two lubricants be mixed in the same engine?
All lubricants on the market (whether petrol or diesel engines, mineral or synthetic) can be intermixed. Nonetheless, mixing two different quality oils reduces the overall quality.
- What is the difference between a synthetic and a mineral lubricant?
A
mineral lubricant is made up of a base obtained directly from oil distillation plus some additives which improve its performance.
With a
synthetic lubricant, the bases are treated through a physical/chemical process in order to obtain a higher quality and performance. With semi-synthetic lubricants, mineral and synthetic are combined.
- Are synthetic lubricants the best?
Yes. Synthetic lubricants have been specially created to respond to the demands of the engine or to be used in extreme temperatures and very intense service conditions.
- What is the best viscosity level for a lubricant to have?
That recommended by the car manufacturer.
- Can viscosity vary from one lubricant to another?
Yes. It may be necessary to adapt the viscosity on the basis of what the vehicle is used for, the environment and the weather conditions.
- Can lubricants with different viscosities be mixed?
Yes. In the face of an
urgent need such as refuelling when the oil level is low. However, it should be remembered that the viscosity will be of a lower quality.
- How often should lubricants be changed?
The time which passes between changes of lubricant is determined by the manufacturer on the basis of its technical performance and the characteristics of the engine. In general this interval depends on two things: the distance in kilometres and the time of use.
However, in some cases, like urban driving, in which the car is constantly being stopped and started, the interval between the change of oils is more important. Taking into account the conditions of use, it could be said that the oil should be changed on average, once per year.
- If the lubricant is topped up can a change be avoided?
No. With use the lubricant becomes polluted, diluted and less pure, it is contaminated by fuel residues and rust. As a result it loses its effectiveness and quality.
Once its useful life is up, its qualities change and it no longer guarantees the protection of your engine. Therefore, it is necessary to renew the oil load on a regular basis. Periodic refills do not regenerate its properties.
However, the oil level should be checked periodically (every 1000 kilometres) and, above all, before a
long journey. If necessary it is a good idea to top it up with new oil.
- Does the fact that the lubricant is black mean that it is in poor condition?
No. Keeping the engine clean is one of the lubricant's functions. The engine's combustion process produces soot, lacs and other impurities. The function of the lubricant is to collect these impurities and as a result it is normal that it becomes black.
