The iron and steel industry originated in geographically independent areas, with subsoils rich in minerals, iron or copper. Iron products, transformed from billets or ingots to rods and other tools, made the development of a flourishing metallurgy industry possible. Sharp instruments used as weapons, firearms, farm tools, kitchen utensils, iron fittings, metal fastenings, wrought-iron gates and grilles, etc. – for centuries, these were all produced by forging. The Iron and Steel industry consists of extracting iron from the mineral by heating, first mixed with the fuel and later separated (in a crucible). Metallurgy consists of extracting metals from the mineral, in order to leave these metals ready for production. It is a wide-ranging sector that can be classified by quality or by client type, as described in the market section.
