During the X edition of the Foro Nacional del Transporte held this March and organised by the Asociación Española de Codificación Comercial, it was announced that the most popular mode for the movement of goods in Spain in 2007 was road transport. Around 84% of goods were transported by road.

The data given by the General Director of Land Transport at the Ministerio de Fomento, Juan Miguel Sánchez, confirmed that the most popular choice for goods transport is the roads. The data related to 2007 given at the Foro, make it very clear that the roads are still the most popular for goods transport in Spain. During 2007 road transport accounted for 83.86% of all movement of this type, the figure for shipping was 10.48%, only 2.64% chose the railways.

Data supplied at the Foro Nacional del Transporte also compared the road transport activity in Europe with that in the USA. Whilst the level of goods transport on the roads in Europe is 45.6% in the USA it only reaches the figure of 27.5%, compared to the 39.4% of goods that use the railways.

These figures were given along with others that emphasise the importance of goods transport in Spain. Here 48% of goods do not travel more than 1 000km between their starting point and destination. Moreover 85% of the tonnes of goods transported are not carried more than 150km. Something that goes a long way to explaining why roads are the most used means for goods transport.
