Around 15 000 trucks weighing over 3.5 tonnes will be checked on Spanish roads before 14th March according to the DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department. This latest campaign to check trucks on the road network coincides with the operation Truck being carried out in 25 European countries.
The Dirección General de Tráfico has set up a special campaign to monitor trucks with a mass of over 3 500 kg on Spanish roads. The police - Agentes de la Guardia Civil de Tráfico – will carry out checks on at least 15 000 trucks before next 14th March, concentrating on the documents carried in the vehicle and those related to the drivers themselves, as well as their safety equipment, tachographs, level of alcohol and other possible offences when travelling.
According to the latest confirmed data from 2008, there were 4 449 fatal traffic accidents involving a truck with a mass of over 3.5 tonnes in Spain, on both urban roads as well as on motorways. Analysis of this data shows that if a truck of more than 3 500kg is involved in an accident the possibility of a fatality is three times greater.
Sources at the Dirección General de Tráfico remind professionals of how important it is to respect driving and rest times. The latest data indicates that 44% of accidents that occur are related to driver distraction and fatigue. During the previous campaign to monitor trucks back in October last year 518 charges were brought against drivers for exceeding the driving and rest times established in the norms concerning Transporte Terrestre.
