The commercial vehicle market ended 2009 with a record fall in sales

Copy Iveco

The commercial vehicle sector ended 2009 with a historic fall in the number of registrations completed. Sales reached 106 409 units which is the lowest total since 1993, when just 100 800 vehicles were purchased.

According to the national associations of companies working in this sector - Anfac and Ganvam - this record low had not been seen since 1993 when only 100 800 commercial vehicles were sold. In spite of the overall drop during 2009, December was the third consecutive month where the fall was smaller, compared to the rest of the year.

According to Anfac and Ganvam the reasons why sales have fallen in such a manner is because small and medium-sized companies are not very active, this is the sector with the biggest demand for this type of vehicle and at the same time there is a limited amount of credit from banks available. The current economic situation and the high level of unemployment in Spain are other important factors affecting this sector.

A breakdown of the figures by niche shows that there have been large falls in all sectors; sales of vans fell by 25.5%, pick-ups by 36.4% but the biggest fall of 41.1% was seen for MPVs.
