According to data from the DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department - compiled by the Fundación Española para la Seguridad Vial, buses were the safest way to travel on the Spanish road network in 2009. This is down to great improvements in the level of active safety on this type of vehicles, as well as better roads.

At the end of 2009 buses were the safest way to travel on the roads. This was the result of an analysis of the accident figures, and their consequences, comparing them to all other kinds of vehicles that use the road network. The increasing use of seat belts and improved roads were decisive factors for these encouraging figures.

According to the figures recorded in 2009, of the 1 897 fatalities on Spanish roads only 18 were the result of accidents involving a bus. This figure is in stark contrast to the results from the previous year as there was a fall of 13%; there were 25 passenger bus deaths in 2008. On the other hand it is worth mentioning the fact that the total number of buses used for passenger transport in Spain is now up to 43 966, with around 1 200 million people using the services.

Among the vehicles with the highest percentage of victims on the roads are cars - the highest - with 1 039 fatalities, these are followed by vans with 129 victims and mopeds with 76. The number of pedestrians killed fell by 16.3% compared to 2008, with 174 deaths.
