Within the Plan Estratégico de Seguridad Vial 2010-2020 - Strategic Road Safety Plan - which the DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department - is working on, doctors and medical services will acquire a much bigger role in questions of road safety. Sources at the DGT reckon that the advice that is given by those working in health services can be of great importance to drivers.
The Dirección General de Tráfico has the objective, established in the new Plan Estratégico de Seguridad Vial, of awarding a more important role to medical services in the field of road safety. For example advising drivers about the use of Child Retention Systems and making sure that elderly patients keep the faculties that are necessary if they are to continue getting behind the wheel of a car.
Sources at the DGT continue to work on the new Plan Estratégico de Seguridad Vial, which is divided into subjects and groups, and at the same time as analysing the different groups that are involved in road safety matters. And so the work being done by the DGT is analysing groups like motorbike riders, pedestrians, youngsters and the elderly, as well as subjects like drink driving and speeding.
For the time being the Comité de Dirección - Management Committee - of the new Plan Estratégico de Seguridad Vial is analysing the lines followed by the DGT as it plans to give a more important role to doctors in its battle to improve road safety. This committee is made up of the General Directors of the Ministerios de Interior, Justicia, Sanidad and Trabajo - Home Office, Justice, Health and Employment.
