The number of driving permits and licences dropped 36% during 2009

This figure of 36% for 2009 has been released by the CNAE, Confederación Nacional de Autocuelas National Confederation of Driving Schools. And so the current economic situation is also adversely affecting the driving school sector, last year it saw how the number of driving permits and licences fell by over a third, compared to 2008.

According to the Confederación Nacional de Autoescuelas, CNAE, 1 006 593 driving permits and licences were issued in 2009, which is 363 894 fewer than in 2008. This is a drop of 36%, one of the largest falls in this sector over the last few years. It is only comparable to the data from 2003, when the figure did not in fact reach one million driving permits and licences issued.

Faced with this outlook the Confederación Nacional de Autoescuelas has said that it is ready and willing to reactivate the scheme known as A driving licence for 1€ a day, an initiative that started in November 2007 and which to begin with was forecast to last 3 years, but in the end was interrupted in December 2008. Sources at the CNAE, think it is feasible that this type of measure can be restarted as there are funds available for the PYMES from the ICO.

According to calculations made by the CNAE, every year around 100 000 teenagers could benefit from a measure like this, but which is now mothballed and has been so since the end of 2008. In its time it brought 2 830 driving schools together to work on a project that counted on the collaboration of the government, the DGT and the Confederación Nacional de Autoescuelas.
