The DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic department – has set up another special awareness campaign which will run until 19th July, it is specially designed to monitor drink driving. About 800 places will be established for checks and these will carry out 20 000 breathalyser tests every day, at the same time there will be an awareness campaign in the media.
The special awareness campaign that the DGT has set up, whose aim is to check and educate drivers about the dangers of drink driving, plans to test 300 000 drivers over the next two weeks. The special campaign will be in operation until next Sunday, 19th July. And in addition to the breathalyser tests by the police - Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil – the DGT has invited councils representing a population of more than 25 000 inhabitants to join in the campaign by carrying out checks in their own boroughs.
In addition to the increased number of breathalyser tests on Spanish roads the latest blitz on drink drivers will be complemented by an educative campaign with three specific aspects. On the one hand the usual campaign on the TV and radio, on the other the participation of volunteers from the Federación de Asociaciones de Lesionados Medulares, who will be present at the breathalyser tests in 20 provinces so that they can transmitir educational messages directly to drivers. And finally during the whole of the summer there will also be a campaign promoted by Cerveceros de España – Spanish brewers - and 14 more institutions, who will propose an alternative drink for drivers – beer without alcohol.
During the last 12 months 95 000 drivers tested positive for alcohol. 19 000 were arrested for having an excessive level in their blood and some of them, 1 250, are in prison for having repeated this offence. The DGT reminds the public that article 65 of the Ley de Seguridad Vial – Road Safety Law – says that driving under the effects of alcohol, that is to say over the limit, or under the influence of drugs or any similar substance, is a very serious offence. It is also a serious offence to refuse to take a breathalyser test. Fines, a loss of points and even prison sentences can be handed out by the courts for this type of offence.
