Drivers can use a flashing light after an accident or breakdown

According to this new measure, published in the Parliamentary Proceedings - Boletín Oficial del Estado - car drivers and other privately owned vehicles can use a flashing light on the roof of their car after an accident or breakdown from 23rd July onwards. The aim is to avoid accidents because of a lack of visibility.

This new measure makes it possible for the driver of any privately owned vehicle to carry and use a flashing light after an accident or breakdown, in addition to the obligatory reflecting jacket and warning triangles which up to now have been used to show a stationary vehicle on the highway during an emergency. And so drivers who so wish can complement their jacket and triangles with a approved yellow-orange light.

According to the new norm it must be placed above the highest lights on the vehicle in question in such a way that it does not affect the driver`s visibility or the vehicle`s structure. And at the same time the light must be visible in all directions from a distance of one hundred metres.

This type of lighting device is obligatory for vehicles that are carrying out certain services, for example agricultural machinery, tractors and works vehicles, as well as those that cannot travel at over 40kph. It must also be used by vehicles and those that accompany sporting events.
