The DGT predicts over 4.5 million trips over the San José Bank Holiday weekend

According to information released by the DGT - Dirección General de Tráfico Traffic Department - more than 4.5 million trips are predicted over the San José Bank Holiday weekend. A long weekend in 10 regions - comunidades autónomas. And so there will be a noticeable increase in the number of cars on the roads over the next few days.

The predictions for the San José puente have obliged the DGT to set up a special operation to control and monitor the road network until midnight on Sunday 21st March. According to the forecasts made by the DGT, the heaviest traffic will be seen from the early Thursday afternoon onwards at the exits of the large cities that have Friday as Bank Holiday. As well as on Friday morning and during the return operation, Sunday afternoon, above all betweeen 15.00 and 23.00.

Both the Thursday and Sunday afternoons will see the installation of measures to improve traffic flow at the exit and entry points of all big cities respectively. According to the forecasts the main destinations will be the mountains as the ski season has not finished yet, towns with celebrations - fiestas, above in Levante, zones of tourism and areas with second homes.

The DGT will use more than 600 civil servants and specialised technical personnel at traffic management centres, and 9 800 police officers - Agentes de la Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil - as well as the emergency service personnel - from both the ambulance and fire services. Moreover the DGT will be using 1 332 TV cameras, 2 165 data recording stations, more than 1 937 message boards and 18 helicopters, these will constantly be informing the management centres about the exact state of the roads and any incidents that have occurred.

The DGT recommends that you bear in mind the following advice:

• Drive calmly and rest approximately every two hours.
• Adjust your speed to the road conditions and the lane you are using.
• Keep a safe distance away from the vehicle in front of you.
• Seatbelts must be used by all - rear seats too. Take special care with children.
• Do not drink and drive. The safest level of alcohol is 0.00.
• Pay special attention on short trips on secondary roads, these are the most dangerous.
• If you are going to the mountains it is essential to carry chains for snow and/or other anti-slip accessories.
• Beware of motorbikes. They are especiually vulnerable.
• Drive efficiently and think about the braking distance you need.
