The DGT chooses Soria to set up a pilot safety experiment

The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico – Traffic Department) is planning to set up a test phase for its City Road Safety Plan before the summer. Its overriding objective is to lower the number of traffic accidents taking place in cities and built-up zones. The DGT has already chosen the city where the pilot phase of the project will be carried out before it is rolled out all over the country.

The city of Soria in central Spain has been selected by the DGT for the test phase of its City Road Safety Plan, something that the Traffic Department has pinned a lot of hopes on in its aim to improve road safety in cities and built-up zones. One should remember that large cities are the places where a large number of accidents occur, above all due to the large volume of traffic on the streets.

According to the General Director of the DGT, Pere Navarro, the plan is practically ready and just waiting for validation from both the Dirección General de Tráfico itself and the Ayuntamiento de Soria – City Council –where the plan will be tried out. The selection of Soria as the reference point for the first experiments in this plan was made because it is a representative city in terms of size and traffic levels, easily extrapolated to other cities on the Iberian peninsula.

The overriding objective of the new Road Safety Plan is to try and develop a tool that can lower the accident rate in boroughs with more than 25 000 inhabitants, the aim being to carry out a plan of action that lowers the number of accidents in built-up zones, in such a way that the risks for all road users are significantly reduced.
