June sees the smallest fall in car registrations since April 2008

In spite of the first six months of the year registering a drop of 38.3% in car sales, compared to last year, June saw the lowest fall in the car market since April 2008. The introduction of subsidies to purchasers via the Plan 2000E, which had already had an effect in May, confirmed its role last month.

According to data from the Spanish associations of manufacturers and dealers, Anfac and Ganvam, June saw 96 706 cars registered. This is a fall of 15.9% compared to 2008 but at the same time the smallest fall since April 2008. This means that the first six months of 2009 closed with a total of 433 077 units, car and off-roads. sold. This is a fall of 38.3% compared to the first six months of 2008.

Seeing the effect that the Plan 2000E had on sales during the first few weeks of operation in May, when it was set up, there was a lot of expectation to see whether it would continue boosting sales during June. In the end it was so, as it encouraged the public to purchase around 15 000 vehicles in June. 68% of the cars sold in June were diesel powered, whilst the rest were equipped with petrol engines.

This data released by Anfac and Ganvam also shows an important growth in sales in seven Spanish regions - comunidades autónomas. Those with the highest rate of growth were Asturias, 18.3% and Castilla y León, 14.5%. The rest of the regions that had higher sales were Galicia, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarra and The Basque country, with the remainder recording falls in sales of cars.
