Brussels in favour of making ESP obligatory for all cars

The European Parliament has approved a proposed law which obliges all newly registered cars to be equipped with ESP, that is an Electronic Stability Control System. The proposal is pending approval by the European Union`s Council of Ministers and if things go as expected all new cars will have ESP fitted from 2014 onwards.

According to this new proposed law new models of cars and industrial vehicles registered in the EU will have to be fitted with a system of electronic stability control starting in November 2011. And after that starting in 2014 this measure will be applied to all newly registered vehicles, without exception.

In the meantime though it has to be formally ratified and approved by the European Union`s Council of Ministers so that it can be applied in all member states of the UE. This is one of the laws included in the package of measures that the European Union has prepared for raising the level of road safety and so reduce the accident rate on European roads.

The Electronic Stability Control System, better known as ESP, is a system that combines ABS, the Anti-Blocking System used on a car`s brakes, and ASR, Anti-Slip Regulation sometimes known as Traction Control. Without a shadow of a doubt it is one of the most important accessories that car manufacturers have mounted on their vehicles in the last few years. It actively helps the driver to stop safely in a large number of dangerous situations they may find themselves in on the road.
