The OCU - Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios Spanish Consumers` Organisation - warns the public that driving with a temperature of over 35º inside a vehicle considerably lowers a driver`s level of concentration, becoming unaware of one in five road signs. With high temperatures the number of mistakes made at the wheel increases making the trip more dangerous for all those involved.
With the arrival of high summer many people who will be travelling medium and long distances as they make their way to their holiday destinations. High temperatures are one of the factors that have to be taken into account when planning any road trip in summer. The Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios has warned the public of the dangers associated with this holiday period, one that typically sees the highest temperatures of the year.
According to the OCU driving when the temperature inside a vehicle is over 35º is as dangerous as driving after a few drinks. With this example the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios is referring to the drowsiness and lack of concentration that are typical under these conditions, among many other possible effects. And so the level of distraction and mistakes made at the wheel rise considerably in summer, raising the level of danger that is posed by a driver in a very hot car.
The OCU and the Asociación Española de Prevención de Accidentes de Tráfico - Spanish Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents - recommend that the air conditioning system be used at this time of the year, and at the same time recommend that drivers avoid large, heavy meals before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle as they also cause drowsiness and slow reactions.
