Around 21 million drivers have been rewarded with two more points on their licence

July was chosen by the DGT – Traffic Department - to extend the credit of those drivers that had not lost any points from their licence since the new system was introduced back in 2006. Almost 21 million drivers have seen the number of points on their licence rise to 14, on the other hand around 50 000 drivers have lost all their points since 2006.

As is stipulated in the law - Ley 17/2005 – which regulates Driving licences - Permiso y Licencia de Conducir por puntos – all those drivers that have not lost any points since the system was introduced and who have more than three years experience have received two more points. This means that around 21 million drivers have more points than last month, with their credit now up to 14 points, a reward for having kept their initial total since 2006.

On the other hand 1 804 509 drivers have been penalised at least once, about 7% of all drivers in Spain. Of these the most worrying group for the DGT is the 1% that have been fined on two or more occasions. The most typical offences when losing points are speeding, 41%, followed by not wearing a seat belt or helmet, 14%, drink driving 9% and using a mobile phone 8%.

Referring to the variations, men account for 81% of the fines, as opposed to 19% of women. According to the data released by the DGT the age group that receives most fines is the one between 25 - 34. The total number of drivers that have lost all their points in three years is 50 000. The DGT has a section on its website giving all the relevant information about the licence and points, and there drivers can find out online how many points they currently have on their licence.
