Purchasers of vehicles must receive information about vehicle emissions starting in 2010

Any person buying a vehicle will receive information about its CO2 emissions starting in 2010, a measure that has been taken by the Ministerio de Sanidad y Política Social. According to Trinidad Jiménez the minister in this department, the aim of this this measure is to avoid advertising that misleads the public.

The decision taken by the Ministerio de Sanidad y Política Social and which comes into force next year aims to avoid misleading practices in the field of vehicle advertising, above all when it comes to providing information about CO2 emissions from the cars themselves. Since January 2008 the Spanish registration tax is closely linked to the emission levels of a vehicle, cars are divided into four blocks depending on the level of their polluting emissions.

In addition to affecting the registration tax the level of each vehicle`s polluting emissions will also affect the annual local tax paid to the council in which the owner resides – permiso de circulación - because next year the government is planning to relate this tax to the level of emissions and to replace the current system based on the “fiscal horse power” of the vehicle in question. The formula for the current calculation of this tax includes the engine`s technical characteristics as well as the diameter of the cylinders, the number of cylinders and the travel of the pistons.

Bit by bit efficient driving has become very important for the car manufacturing and marketing sectors. In this way the culture of teaching to drive efficiently and intelligently has now become to all extents and purposes something that is practically essential.
