A delegation of members from Spain’s parliamentary subcommittee and spokespersons for the Committee on Industry visited the expansion works at Repsol’s Cartagena refinery. Repsol Chairman Antonio Brufau hosted the visit and gave a guided tour of what will be one of the world’s most modern refineries when its upgrade is complete.
During the visit, the members of parliament inspected the progress of the capacity-expansion project, which is being carried out in the expected timeframe. Currently there are 3,500 people building the new units, together with 1,000 engineers and 300 workers in local workshops.
This project, will contribute to significantly reduce the growing deficit in Spain of medium distillates, mainly diesel, and is part of Repsol’s programme to adapt its installations to produce clean transportation fuels, promoting the use of biofuels (biodiesel) and improving energy efficiency in the production process.
The new units will double Cartagena's production capacity to 11 million tons a year, improving Spain’s trade balance by considerably reducing imports of fuel for transport.
The expansion of the Cartagena refinery is one of the key projects outlined in the company's 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. With an investment of more than 3.2 billion euros, it is the largest industrial investment ever made in Spain, reflecting the company’s firm commitment to the country’s economic and social development.
