Repsol Chairman, Antonio Brufau, the Libyan Energy Minister, Shukri Ghanem, and the Health Minister, Muhammad Hijazi, opened the refurbished Ubari Hospital in south-western Libya, in the Murzuq Basin. In November 2007, the company signed an agreement with the Libyan Ministry of Health and Environment to refurbish the premises, and work began in 2008.
Repsol delivered two ambulances, two buses and the first provision of basic medical equipment to the hospital as part of the commitments included in the agreement. Water and electricity supply facilities and the air conditioning system were also repaired.
With a budget of 6.5 million Euros, this agreement has not only allowed the refurbishment and improvement of the facilities, but has also given rise to the implementation of training programs for hospital staff, ensuring the continuity of the project. The training program, targeted at both the medical and nursing teams, is carried out at the Amman University in Jordan.
The opening of this Hospital is part of Repsol’s commitment to supporting local community development, contributing to sustainable development in the regions where the company operates. This initiative is being carried out together with partners Total, OMV and Statoil-Hydro.
Repsol is present in Libya since the 70s and today is the largest private oil company in that country. In June 2008, Repsol signed an extension agreement for its exploration rights in blocks NC-186 y NC-115 until 2032.
