It is a project developed by Repsol aimed at improving energy efficiency in the fishing industry by replacing trawlers' petrol engines and tanks with bottled LPG systems, which will encourage the use of a cheaper, more environmentally friendly fuel.
The programme of converting engines is being carried out in Galicia, a region home to 4,600 boats, of which 2,000 are deep-draft vessels. In the first stage of the project, 36 petrol-powered boats were converted. 150 more are on the waiting list for a replacement engine before the end of 2009.
The project is backed by the Galician autonomous government and has acquired considerable social significance as it combines the aspects of efficiency, emissions reductions and environmental protection. Fuel costs are reduced by around 30%, according to the fishermen themselves.
The conversion of petrol engines to LPG has been carried out and analysis made of its efficient use in the marine environment. LPG use reduces CO2 emissions, contributing to Repsol's commitment in this area.
Environmental advantages for the flora and fauna of the marine environment. The next step is to extend the project beyond Galicia, in the fishing and leisure sectors alike.
