World Energy Model

Analysing the consumer model for energy sources is crucial for the assessment of the challenges which lie before us. This model, in which oil and other fossil fuels play an important role, is included in the energy model of world consumption of primary energy. In this section you will find all relevant data and the foreseeable evolution of this model according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

  • Globally, hydrocarbons contribute more than half of the primary energy consumed. Specifically, 33% of primary global energy consumption comes from oil, making it the most widely used energy source.
  • No major changes are expected in the coming years. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in its base scenario for the 2011 World Energy Outlook, oil will decline by 5 percentage points in the 2035 energy mix compared to 2009. Meanwhile, natural gas will reach a 23% share, with a total energy demand estimated at 16.961 billion equivalent tons of oil.
