In Spain, the sales of regulated gas, which group the rated gas supply until 30 June 2008 and the services of third-party access to the network, both of gas distribution and of secondary transport, came to 229,585 GWh, a decrease of 15%. This reduction is due to regularisations because of businesses closing in the residential market. The percentage of distribution services and secondary transport for third-party access to the network fell 10.3% due to lower industrial activity, to 229,559 GWh.
Distribution network expansion
Gas Natural SDG continues to expand its distribution network, which stood at 47,597 kilometres on 31 December 2009. Excluding the effects of divestments in Cantabria and Murcia, this reached 50,697 kilometres and 33 new municipalities in 2009. The number of supply points at the end of the year came to 5,698,000 after discounting divestments.
The network increased by 101,000 points of supply over the last twleve months, 37.3% less than the same period the previous year, mainly due to the lower volume of new housing construction and the aforementioned effect of disinvestment in Cantabria and Murcia.
On 19 December 2009, Gas Natural SDG agreed the sale of 504,000 supply points, and approximately 400,000 gas customers in the Self-governing Region of Madrid. The agreement is subject to approval by the relevant authorities and is expected to come into force in the first quarter of 2010.
