Electricity assets in the world

Demand for electricity in Spain fell heavily as a consequence of the economic crisis, especially in industry. Mainland demand in 2009 (251,509 GWh) was 4.5% lower than in 2008. Gas Natural SDG electricity production in the mainland came to 28,728 GWh, up 57.4% due to the incorporation of Unión Fenosa. Of this figure, 26,694 GWh corresponded to generation in the Ordinary Regime (+30%).

Generation in the Special Regime stood at 2,034 GWh, an increase of 124.8%. Hydraulic electricity production reached 1,849 GWh as a consequence of the hydrological characteristics of 2009. Nuclear production was 2,908 GWh. In thermal power, due to lower demand and the growth of the Special Regime, there was a reduction in coal-fired production. Electricity generation with combined cycles came to 21,192 GWh, up 22.2% due to the incorporation of Unión Fenosa.

Electricity sales included sales on the open market and the last resort market, and the previous supply based on rates. Sales on the open market reached a share of 16.6%. Last resort sales, in force since 1 July 2009, reported sales of 6,452 GWh, and 9,857 GWh for supply based on rates. In Mexico, Gas Natural SDG has combined cycle plants with a joint power of 3,803 MW, as well as a 54 kilometre gas pipeline. Energy generated in 2009 came to 20,921 GWh, the increase being due to the incorporation of the Unión Fenosa plants.

Gas Natural SDG also has electricity generation assets in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Kenya, where the energy generated over the year totalled 4,476 GWh. On 9 December 2009 the sale of Empresa de Energía de Pacífico S.A. ESP. (EPSA), operating in Colombia, went through. All the financial magnitudes have been reclassified as discontinued activities and are not included in this information.
