Key projects

After 3 years of extensions and improvements, in late 2011 both the Cartagena and Petronor refineries began operations again. This will allow us to position the Repsol refining layout among the best and most efficient in Europe.

With the Cartagena project finished, the plant is a modern installation considered to be among the most efficient in Europe.

Last year was characterised by the extension and improvement work undertaken at the Cartagena and Petronor refineries. These projects, approved in 2007 with the Board of Directors, have been a key part of Repsol's Strategic Plan.

With the completion of these works, the company meets its intended objectives such as increasing the distillation and conversion capacity of the refining system. This will help maximise middle distillate production, in a clearly deficient environment, reducing fuel-oil production by processing heavier crude oils.

It will also improve energy efficiency, as well as safety and the environment. All these objectives will allow us to position the Repsol refining layout among the best and most efficient in Europe.

Cartagena, the largest industrial project in Spain

The Cartagena project, also known as C10, has increased the complex's production capacity to 11 million tonnes, or in other words, 220,000 barrels per day. With this extension the Cartagena refinery has become the largest industrial project in the history of Spain.

The wealth generated during the construction stage was 3.152 billion euros in investments, the participation of around 20,000 people and the creation of jobs for some 3,000 people over 3 years. The operating period will not be less and will create 1,600 direct jobs and over 8,000 spin-off jobs.

With the finalisation of this project, the Cartagena refinery is a modern facility and is positioned among the most efficient in Europe from an energetic and environmental perspective.
