In Argentina, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, Repsol YPF is the leading distributor of LPG. This position, combining production sources in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, presents a competitive advantage and strengthens vertical integration.
In Argentina, YPF is the country's biggest LPG producer. In the retail market, it sells bottled and bulk LPG to households, commerce and industry, with a market share of 34.8%. Until May 2005, the market was free of restrictions, although since 2002, representatives have met with the government to conclude agreements on the stability of butane prices.
Since this year, the new LPG Act establishes that the Secretary of Energy shall fix the wholesale prices of butane and propane on a quarterly basis, and will recommend to the public maximum sale prices of bottled gas for domestic use. The distribution of bottled LPG is carried out entirely through distributors, who in turn retail the product at sales outlets.
Lipigas, a company in which Repsol holds a 45% stake, is the market leader in Chile with a market share of 37.6% and sales of 430 kt in 2008.
In Peru, Repsol has an interest in the LPG market through the Solgas Repsol brand and is the leading company in terms of prestige and quality with a market share of 38.5%. Sales in 2008 were 408 kt. The Chilean and Peruvian markets are completely restriction-free. Bottled LPG distribution is carried out by distributors (exclusive or otherwise), who in turn retail the product at sales outlets.
In Ecuador, Repsol has a stake in Duragas, the leading LPG distribution company, that operates nationwide with a market share of 38.9%.
In 2008, Duragas marketed 390 kt of LPG. The sale price of bottled LPG in Ecuador is heavily subsidised by the State. Marketing is carried out by a network of exclusive distributors.
In Bolivia, since YPFB assumed control over natural resources according to a decree-law that nationalized hydrocarbons resources, product availability has seen a drastic fall, which has in turn caused decrease in the volume of sales. Despite this, sales figures in the retail sector reached 11 kt of LPG, with a market share of 6%. Repsol's LPG marketing activity in Brazil commenced in 2004 in the bulk and wholesale markets. 2008 sales stood at 21 kt.
