Graduate in Economics and Business Studies from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Autonomous University of Madrid). Trade Expert and State Economist since 1981. He has extensive professional experience in the energy sector and particularly with Repsol. As General Head of Oil and Gas in the Ministry of Industry, he participated in the negotiations for Spain's entry into the European Common Market and in the adaptation of the Spanish Oil Monopoly (CAMPSA), as well as the development of Spain's gas industry.
From 1987 to 1991 he held the posts of Business Director of INH (National Hydrocarbons Institute), Executive Director of Marketing for Repsol Petróleo, Executive Business Director of Repsol, S.A. and, in December 1991, was named Executive Vice-Chairman of Repsol Comercial de Productos Petrolíferos, a post he held until his appointment in May 1996 as Secretary of State for Energy and Mineral Resources in the Ministry of Industry and Energy.
In 2003, after his return to Repsol, he was appointed Corporate Director of Shared Services. Since January 2005, he has been Executive Director of Upstream, a post he currently balances with that of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Repsol Sinopec Brazil since the end of 2010.
