Misano was one of the classic races in the calendar in the 80s and the start of the 90s. Then the track had to have some modifications to make it safer, it returned to the World MotoGP Championship three years ago. The track in San Marino will become the setting for a big motorbike party this weekend with the whole circuit full of ‘tifosis’ all encouraging all local riders.
Misano has witnessed some great moments in the history of motorbike racing, but it has also seen some of the worst. In 1989 most riders boycotted the circuit as they considered it too dangerous when wet. In 1993 Wayne Rainey, USA, had a serious accident that brought an end to his career and left him an invalid for life.
This is why the circuit, which had been built in 1972, was left out of the calendar. And it was not until 2007 that it was able to form part of the history of this sport once again, but some modifications were needed. The big novelty was that, according to the MotoGP safety norms, the direction of the race had to be changed and so now the riders go anti-clockwise.
The Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa explains this track is one of the fastest in the whole calendar, but that it seems small and narrow “although it has a good level of grip, last year it was very bumpy”. The circuit is situated very close to Valentino Rossi`s home town, something that is noticed in the atmosphere. “The stands are always full to the brim with tifosi’” he says.
