The Spanish rider Marc Márquez was one of the sensations last season. In his first ever season he confirmed what many have been saying for some time: that he has a promising future ahead of him. In spite of suffering from bad luck throughout the year the youngest rider in the Repsol team has more than justified his inclusion and has managed to make a name for himself in the history of this sport, becoming the youngest Spanish rider ever to get a podium finish.
But that is not the only feat that he managed to achieve last season, Márquez ends 2008 as the best of all the KTM riders and second in the ‘rookies’ ranking in the 125cc category. An achievement to bear in mind above all after suffering from two injuries which meant he had to miss out on a few of races at the beginning and end of the season.
The Spaniard tackled his debut season with determination, confidence and courage and at the same time he overcame the weight handicap (he had to load an additional weight on his bike to reach the minimum), amazing all and sundry wiith his quality and above all with his rapid adaptation to the competition.
A fall in the pre-season forced him to miss the first two races of the year so his debut was delayed until the round in Portugal where he finished 18th. He did not take long to stand out because in his fifth participation in a World Championship race, the British GP, Márquez was third, becoming the youngest ever Spaniard to finish on the podium, at the age of just 15.
Far from being a flash in the pan he continued to ride alongside the best in the championship. In the San Marino GP he almsot got another podium finish, but in the end got a deserved fourth place. At Indianapolis, where the bad weather determined the outcome of the race he was sixth, showing that he has talent in all types of conditions.
Márquez wanted to finish his season at home, in Valencia, with another success in front of his compatriots to bring a happy end to a great first season. But a bad fall in practice before the Malaysian GP, the penultimate rouund of the season, meant that he had to finish the season prematurely. But he has many years ahead of him to delight racing fans who already have him down as a future champion.
