Next year Spanish circuits will be the testing ground for the 600cc motorbikes that will be ridden in the new category that will be introduced in the World MotoGP Championship in 2011. The bikes will make their deut and compete in the CEV (España de Velocidad – Spanish Speed Championship) where their performance will be checked and allow any problems identified to be corrected.
The objective is for the Moto2 to be introduced and little by little and be eventually installed as the substitute for the current 250cc championship. Therefore, after being tested in the Spanish Speed Championship during 2009 the 600cc motorbikes will be on the old 250cc competition grid a couple of years later.
The aim of this is to make the introduction the least traumatic as possible and to give the teams enough time to develop their engines. Last week the FIM (Federation International de Motociclisme) published the latest regulations for this new category whose aim is to continue as a feeder championship for MotoGP but at the same time to be more profitable.
The motorbikes in this new category will have a maximum permitted displacement of 600cc and at the same time the maximum number of cylinders will be four, and this of course means that bikes with two or three cylinders will be allowed. The biggest novelty will let the teams decide on standard options regarding the engine and electronics.
