This week, the first stone of the new Balatonring circuit has been laid. Next year, this circuit will host the Hungarian GP, one of the main changes to the World Championship for 2009. Many people related to the sport met in the town of Savoly, in Western Hungary, to witness this symbolic act.
Local rider Gabor Talmacsi did not want to miss this important event. The 2007 125CC World Champion attended with his team manager, Jorge Martínez Aspar. In fact, the former Spanish rider was one of the main driving forces behind this project. The cooperation between Spain and Hungary to set up this initiative was apparent, as in addition to laying the first stone of the circuit, a capsule containing the flags of the two countries and other symbolic mementos of the day was buried.
Talmacsi was extremely excited at the prospect of racing in front of his home crowd. “I think that it will be exciting to race here because, if you remember Brno, there were 30-40,000 people there with my national flag. I’d like to try the track as soon as possible, to gain an advantage,” he said.
Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta also commented, “Since we first spoke with the Hungarian government and all the representatives of the project, we have realized that this is a very important for both them and ourselves. I’m sure that if the weather is OK the track can be finished on time and we can have a Hungarian Grand Prix on 20 September 2009.”
