After the period for candidates to present their applications to become the only tyre supplier for MotoGP 2009 Championship closed, the only company to make an offer has been named; Bridgestone, this is after the French Michelin company and others decided not to make a tender. Although logically the news has not been announced officially, it is almost certain that Bridgestone will be will be the only company that provides the tyres for all the teams in the top category of motorbike racing next season.
If nothing untoward happens Bridgestone will be officially named as the only tyre supplier for the World MotoGP Championship on 18th October at the Malaysian GP. Sources at Bridgestone have already made their first statements after it was revealed that Michelin had decided not to present an application: “We at Bridgestone would have preferred a championship with many suppliers but as this is not possible we think that it is better for us to be the only supplier, and not others" admitted Hiroshi Yamada, the head of the competition section at the Japanese company.
So Michelin will not be present in the World Championship next year after supplying tyres to racing teams for the last 35 seasons, its roll of honour includes 26 titles. So the 2009 season will be the first in a new stage of the championship, one where absolutely all the riders on the starting grid will be using Bridgestone tyres.
