Plasterboard furniture

Laminated plasterboard is increasingly being used to make furniture, mainly shelving, supports, headboards and auxiliary furniture. It is the perfect material due to the fact that it is easy to work with and has a smooth and even appearance.

If you are thinking of making some shelves, a sideboard or some auxiliary furniture for your home, we recommend that you consider making it from laminated plasterboard, often known as sheets of Pladur® in Spain. Pladur® is a registered trademark for internal separators, which belongs to the Uralita Group, the market leader in its sector in Spain, with millions of square metres installed in all kinds of buildings. Its laminated plasterboard range is very extensive and contains models to suit all kinds of purposes: partition walls, false ceilings, wall coverings, floating floors, furniture and decoration.

In order to make furniture out of this material, the best option is to use honeycomb Pladur which is composed of two sheets of Pladur® N, or honeycomb plasterboard made by any other brand, which is designed specifically for this use. If you like doing DIY and you have basic knowledge of the subject, you will not find it difficult to make a piece of furniture from laminated plasterboard. Read the manufacturer’s instructions (Pdf) carefully and make sure you understand the entire process, and follow the associated guidelines.

Enquire in the shop about the number of honeycomb panels who will need depending on your design, as well as the accessories and profiles you will require in order to complete the work, since these sheets are screwed to profiles which are sold with them. Clarify all of your doubts with the expert and you will see how easy it is, since it is a clean and light material that is easy to work with, which you can use to create all kinds of shapes (straight and curved) and which allows all kinds of finishes.

Product characteristics

Laminated plasterboard is composed of a base sheet which is made of a plaster centre covered in two multi-layered cellulose sheets which give the material its smooth and even appearance which is similar to a new wall. An ideal appearance for built-in furniture. As such, if you want to decorate your lounge with the classic built-in furniture, we recommend that you build it with laminated plaster. It will be much easier than using other materials; you will not generate any waste or rubble, you will not make any noise whilst you work, you won’t make anything dirty and the result will be satisfactory once you have painted it in the same colour as the walls and it becomes part of the room.

These panels allow you to incorporate details, knobs and doors in order to complete your design. However, you should be aware that it has a lower resistance level than other materials such as medium-density fibreboard, for example, as such if you are going to place heavy items on your piece of furniture, it would be best to consult an expert. These components are quite resistant and withstand normal use, but they do not have the solid nature of wood, stratified plastic or high density Formica.

Their advantages include their versatility (they can be cut to the millimetre, which means that they can be fitted perfectly anywhere); their cleanliness and lightness; the fact that they are easy to work with, and their reasonable price (15% less than the cost of similar projects using other materials). If you think you are not capable of implementing the design yourself, which requires time and patience, it is better to call an experienced professional, although if you are a handyman, we recommend that you try it.
