Mosquito nets, effective protection from insects

Mosquitoes and other flying insects come into our homes in the summer. Mosquito nets are a good way of preventing them from entering the house and enjoying the summer without the presence of these unwelcome guests.

There are two kinds of mosquito net which are clearly distinguished by the Spanish Royal Academy, those made of gauze or netting which hang over the bed, and frames for doors and windows. Both options provide valid protection from flying insects, although the latter are more effective since they prevent flies, mosquitoes and wasps from entering the house, whilst mosquito nets made from gauze or netting only stop the insect from disturbing us when we are asleep. However, the netting options are highly decorative and add a colonial touch to any bedroom. Perfect for areas in the country or by the sea where there are swarms of mosquitoes, they are very cheap, brighten up the bedroom and come in different designs depending on the shade chosen and the detail they incorporate. Mosquito nets made from netting or gauze, which are now sold in many home furnishings stores, can be customised with embroidery, bows, tassels or children’s motifs for children’s bedrooms, opting for original canopies which will transform the room.

Frames for doors and windows

There is a wide range of options in mosquito screens or frames for doors and windows. The right choice depends on the kind of room that you wish to protect from flying insects. For example, a hole that cannot be opened and closed (ventilation gaps in windows and doors for gas installations) or windows that cannot be accessed easily can be fitted with fixed mosquito screens, which are fitted to the window. Fixed mosquito screens are a good option in houses, since the fact that they are fitted to the external part of the door or windows can change the appearance of the façade, a solution which may be opposed by the residents’ association in a block of flats.

In the majority of homes, the most recommendable option is roll-up mosquito nets which work the same way as conventional blinds, such that they can be rolled up and tied up during the winter and then be reopened when the good weather arrives. There are many options in this category depending on the where they are to be used. There are single or double vertical roll-up mosquito nets for large areas such as balconies and doors. There are also sliding roll-up mosquito nets, which are made for sliding windows and doors.

Before buying a mosquito net for doors or windows it is essential to explain to the salesman where you want to hang them, as well as the way the door or window opens and closes along with its dimensions. They will advise you about the most effective model for protecting yourself from flying insects during the summer.

Long-lasting mosquito nets

Numerous NGOs that work in Africa organise campaigns to provide long-lasting mosquito nets to the African people. It is the best way of preventing malaria, which is the main cause of infant mortality on this continent. Long-lasting mosquito nets, made from resistant fabrics, cost six euros each, and they can save many lives. In 2005, Unicef bought 17 million long-lasting mosquito nets and became the world’s leading provider. There are many companies that participate in this kind of initiative, including the Danish company Vestergaard Frandsen, which specialises in creating emergency solutions for controlling disease in underdeveloped countries. Its long-lasting mosquito nets and curtains are made from materials which repel insects which cause harmful pandemics, even after they have been washed many times and used for many years.
