Ceiling fans

Ceiling fans have become decorative objects and work well in bedrooms, lounges and bathrooms, but the most important thing is that they circulate the air appropriately and are silent.

The key to a good ceiling fan lies in the perfect balance between the volume of air that it moves and energy efficiency, a characteristic that is determined by the device’s motor capacity. A low-capacity motor consumes less energy than a more powerful one, but the air circulation can also be less effective, such that it does not achieve the desired temperature level.

Before buying a ceiling fan, measure the room in which it is to be installed and speak to the supplier about the product that will best suit your needs. The options in terms of size are usually between 107cm and 132cms (from tip to tip of the blade), in order to adapt to small, medium and large rooms. You should also ask the professional about the kind of ceiling from which the fan is to be hung, since not all ceilings can bear the weight of these devices, and in any case, you will be giving him essential tips for installing it properly.

Silent and still

Two fundamental aspects that you should assess before buying a ceiling fan are the levels of noise and movement. Don’t be fooled by attractive looking products. Look at its robustness, the material used for the blades, the joins between the blades and the central mechanism, and test it before taking it home. If you detect a whirring noise, this will be the sound that will accompany you when you switch it on at home. It is vitally important that your fan is silent, since the noise produced by some models is the most common consumer complaint in relation to these devices, and at the same time, it is one of the details that will help you to decide on the quality of a product. Generally, a silent ceiling fan is usually well designed and carefully made. It is a clear sign that the manufacturer has not cut costs in terms of the materials and systems which guarantee the absence of noise and movement. The price is also a factor to consider. The price range of ceiling fans is between 100 and 1000 euros, approximately. It is unlikely that a cheap device can meet the required quality standards.

Decorative objects

When you have checked that the fan fulfils your requirements, you can look at other features, such as aesthetics, colours and finishes, in order to choose the model that goes best with the decoration in which you are going to put it. Colonial fans, in true Hemingway style; rustic fans, with wooden blades of different types and textures; modern fans, with aluminium or polycarbonate blades in different colours make up an interesting range of options. Currently, some of the best options are those created by prestigious designers, such as the Italian, Ferdi Giardini, who designed the Blow model over ten years ago; the North American, Ron Rezec, founder of Modern Fan Co., a specialist in modern ceiling fans, or the team from the US company, Hunter, one of the big companies in the sector, with all sorts of top quality designs.

There are versions with and without lights, and with different types of activation mechanisms. There are those that work by pulling a chain that hangs from the device, and practical models that are switched on using a remote control which you can also use to regulate the different speeds, and others which are turned on and off using the light switch.
