Radios, watches, cameras, cell phones and a long list of other common devices contain batteries with toxic substances that must be handled properly for recycling.
Mercury, nickel, lithium and cadmium are the chemicals normally used to batteries. They transform chemical energy into electricity. In car batteries the main component is lead, used to start the ignition.
The key to the success of this kind of battery, which combines led with sulphuric acid, is that they are easy to charge. They provide a lot of volts, are easy to manufacturer and low in cost compared to other kinds of rechargeable batteries. A lead-acid battery has an energy density 20 times greater than nickel-cadmium or nickle-iron batteries.
Despite the affordability and performance of these batteries, their makeup can be dangerous and a source of pollution if they are not treated and recycled properly.
The situation in Spain
Fortunately, it is no longer common to see car batteries thrown away in the countryside or beside a garbage bin. Their widespread use and the car batteries tend to be replaced at auto repair places has facilitated their recycling. These places serve as temporary warehouses for batteries before they are treated.
Drivers trying to get rid of a used car battery should take it to the recycling facility closest to their home. All they need to do is contact town hall for information.
Recycle: does Spain make the grade?
In Spain, 95 per cent of car batteries are recycled. The recycling of car batteries is a problem that has been solved and is the main source for obtaining lead in Spain, said Álvaro Rodríguez of the Spanich Recylcing Federation.
He said levels of recycling are achieved that surpass those of any other metal.Of the 95 percent of batteries that are recycled, 99 percent of the material is re-used.The only remains are the decorations, like the stickers.
Once sorted and classified at a treatment center, the lead can be used to make more car batteries, or make other kinds of batteries, among other uses.
