Fridges that connect directly to the supermarket, interactive televisions with a totally 'a la carte' programme schedule... Household appliances possess new features aimed at saving effort and energy.

They are known as intelligent household appliances and there is no doubt that new technology now forms part of our homes, a place where the kitchen is the nerve centre. Consequently, white goods are starting to have a small browser which connects to the internet and other technologies in order to perform better and ensure better energy efficiency. These exclusive appliances, if properly programmed, are able to produce shopping lists and send the order to the supermarket, from where the goods are sent directly to the house without needing to spend time and money on going to the shopping centre. In addition to saving time, the new models save money and respect the environment more. New machines use a lot less energy than older models. As one example, the energy saved by using an LCD screen as opposed to a cathode ray television can lead to a saving of up to 40% on the monthly bill. Due to their environmentally-friendly design, greater efficiency and lower consumption, the widespread use of these increasingly more complex household appliances will help to reduce the environmental and financial worries of todays society. Artificial Intelligence in the homeIn the not too distant future, fridges will also be able to detect that we have run out of a specific food by themselves and automatically add it to the shopping list, they will review the remaining supplies, including the best before dates; vacuum cleaners will hoover by themselves and switch themselves off when they have finished; a similar mechanism, capable of avoiding obstacles, will be used by the latest generation of lawnmowers. When you get home it will be possible to find the house heated to the desired temperature and the dinner ready. Some household brain and kitchen control centre models are now in the shops, although they are currently almost all prototypes or not widely sold by the manufacturers. They are avant-garde appliances which combine the functionality of a television, DVD player, CD player, MP3, Internet access and e-mail, video intercom, radio..., all generally accompanied by a wireless touch screen, keyboard and remote control. The material they are made of is resistant and water proof, which means that they can be cleaned without damaging their components or causing a technical fault. These mechanisms can talk to the coffee machine, for example, so that it makes the coffee for breakfast at the desired time, and they can automatically reconnect after a power cut. Very soon WOB (WAP Over Bluetooth) applications will make remote control of all household appliances possible, from mobile telephones, PDAs or computers. On the other hand, WIFI technology will take internet to every corner of the house. Other features
Technological development will mean that in the near future no-one will pay any attention to how food is prepared, nevertheless it will be cooked to perfection. The days of reheating food and opening the oven door to see whether the roast is done are over. The microwave will include a scanner and will know what to do by reading a barcode on the packet. It will also have a memory containing information about many recipes for different foods and, of course, to store the instructions that the user manually programmes. New functionality such as videos without cassettes, which allow us to record tens of hours of programmes, the home video club, which offers a films on request service, or time shifting, which stops and rewinds live television programmes, will make consumables like video cassettes and CDs unnecessary. Specially designed to resolve the problems that appliances cause for disabled users, the new electrical household appliances can be equipped with voice synthesis technology. As such, the equipment is able to communicate via radiofrequency with a system that translates all the actions which can be performed using the remote controls into audible information for the user, instantly offering them data about the selected programmes, operation status etc. It goes without saying that all elements connected to the network have a self-diagnosis system so that they can warn you of any technical fault which might occur.
