Eating out with children

Sometimes parents consider a day out with children that involves eating outside their normal environment. Consequently, it is worth knowing the requirements that restaurants must fulfil in order for the whole family to be able to enjoy the meal.

When the opportunity to eat out arises, first the restaurant must be chosen. This decision is particularly important when there are children to consider, since they usually determine the venue due to their preferences or age.

Nowadays, numerous restaurants have a children’s menu designed for the smallest members of the family. This offers two or three dishes to choose from, although the options usually involve pasta, fried foods, chicken and meat with plenty of chips, served on tablecloths decorated with children’s designs.

Breaking with routine

However, eating out can be an opportunity for children to gradually get used to new flavours and break with the eating routine that they never get tired of but which, in the long term, may lead to health issues. Other restaurants, on the other hand, do not have a specific menu for children. In such cases, you can select a dish that they like and share it with them if the portions are big enough.

When choosing a restaurant, it is worth knowing certain important aspects in advance such as whether it has a no-smoking area, since it is not recommendable for children to eat exposed to cigarette smoke. It is also advisable to make sure that the restaurant has highchairs for children to make it easier to feed them. That way, babies sit at the table and take a place alongside the family. If the children are older but not quite old enough to comfortably reach the table, some restaurants have child’s seats that resolve this issue.

Occasionally, parents consider the alternative of feeding the children first so that once they have finished they can go and play and the parents remain inside enjoying their meal. In other cases, everyone sits down at the table together. This can be a good opportunity for the children to learn table manners and learn how to behave.

Leisure areas

There are restaurants that even have a play area, where they are usually given paper and paints and there are big chalk boards which they share for drawing. Some restaurants even have a child-minding service. Generally, the most popular restaurants with parents are those that have swings outside and gardens away from the traffic, which enable the children to move freely and safely. In this respect, it may be a good idea to go to a rural restaurant or old restored inn, places which are located in the countryside where children can play freely and the adults can enjoy the surroundings.

A popular alternative is to go to fast food restaurants, which are easily recognised by children due to their characteristic logos. The children’s menu is composed of a main dish which can be chosen from different options, a dessert that is usually an ice cream or a milk shake and a drink. Each menu comes with a gift. However, this is food that is very high in calories and fat that is not good for the body and should only be eaten every once in a while. Conscious of this, it is increasingly common to find restaurants that include salads and other healthier dishes such as roast chicken.
